The aftermath of a major incident involving the death of, or serious harm to, a significant number of people is deeply distressing for both the bereaved and injured.
The processes that follow can be complex and unfamiliar. They can be daunting and often involve multiple agencies.
The IPA helps to ensure that:
- victims know how to access support services
- victims are supported in understanding and participating in processes that follow a major incident
- the voices of victims are heard by government
The IPA cannot:
- offer legal advice or representation
- provide financial support or health care
- directly support victims under 18 years of age (but can through a representative)
The IPA acts as a link between victims and public authorities. The IPA will produce reports to government, making recommendations for how victims of major incidents can be better supported and highlight good practice.
