Deputy Prime Minister stands up IPA to support Victims of Manchester Synagogue Attack
The Rt. Hon. David Lammy has declared yesterday's attack at Heaton Park Synagogue to be a Major Incident under section 34(2) of the Victims and Prisoners Act 2024, and has stood up the Independent Public Advocate.
Statement from Cindy Butts:
Yesterday, a truly horrific incident took place at Heaton Park Synagogue in Crumpsall, the heart of Manchester’s Jewish Community. My thoughts remain with the victims, their families, and the wider community.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Justice, David Lammy, has declared this to be a major incident under the Victims and Prisoners Act 2024. As such I have been asked to support the victims of this awful attack.
I will be working closely with the bereaved families, those who were injured and everyone affected by this tragedy to listen and advocate for their needs at this incredibly sensitive time.
I am independent in my role but will work alongside the local authority, Mayor’s office, police and other key agencies to ensure those affected have access to clear information, emotional and practical support, and feel fully included in the processes that will follow this tragedy.
If you or someone you know has been affected by this incident and would like support, you can request help directly through our website. We will continue to update it with relevant information as it becomes appropriate to share publicly.
This is a moment for compassion and solidarity. I am here to stand with victims and families today and throughout the journey ahead.
